Oscar-nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio is gearing up to construct another environment-friendly project, which is set to open its doors in 2018. This time, it is on his very own private island adjacent to the coast of Belize. Here, we look at some of the most prized possessions owned by the high and the mighty..
** Lanai, Hawaii
Owned by: Larry Ellison ($500 m to $600 m)
You hear of small vacation islands being bought for unbelievable prices, but did you ever imagine that the Hawaiian island of Lanai would also be part of a private islands sale? Software tycoon Larry Ellison made this happen when he purchased 98% of the 141-sq-mile resort island. The price of the final transaction remains undisclosed, but some media reports have put the figure somewhere between $500 million and $600 million.
** Abramovich Island, St Barts
Owned by: Roman Abramovich ($90 m)
The Russian oligarch purchased this private island in St Barts for an incredible $90 million. The island now houses a 70-acre estate. The island also played venue to a hip-and-happening New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 2010, that drew the likes of Fergie, Salma Hayek, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, P Diddy and Ellen DeGeneres. The estate houses tennis courts, swimming pools and all the luxury amenities that a billionaire might need.
** Bonds Cay, Bahamas
Owned by: Shakira, Roger Waters and Alejandro Sanz ($16 m)
Columbian pop star Shakira got together with Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters and Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz to purchase the Bahamian island of Bonds Cay for $16 million. The 700-acre island already houses luxury hotels and condos in addition to expansive private beaches, art galleries and an 18-hole golf course. But the trio appears keen to develop the region further and turn it into some kind of an artists’ retreat.
** Rooster Cay, Bahamas
Owned by: Eddie Murphy ($15 m)
Like many expensive private islands owned by celebrities, Rooster Cay is a picture of untouched beauty. Located in the Long Cay region, Eddie’s Rooster Cay is very close to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. However, despite its prime location, it remains a pristine paradise. The actor bought the island in 2007.
** Mago Island, Fiji
Owned by: Mel Gibson ($15 m)
The ‘Braveheart’ bought the private island for a stunning $15 million. While other most expensive private islands owned by celebrities are taking the development route, and are being turned into boutique getaways, luxury resorts and eco hotels, Mel Gibson has no such plans for Mago Island. He is happy with its natural feel.
** Leaf Cay, Exuma Cays, Bahamas
Owned by: Nicholas Cage ($8.5 m)
Leaf Cay is located within Exuma Cays in the Bahamas, close to Johnny Depp’s Little Halls Pond Cay, and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s Goat Cay. The island houses several buildings, including luxury hotels. High-profile visitors can use the 1,500-ft airstrip and the marina. The island’s power supply comes from the Bahamas government. But the USP of Leaf Cay is undoubtedly its virgin beaches.
** Little Halls Pond Cay, Bahamas
Owned by: Johnny Depp ($3.6 m)
The 45-acre island in the Bahamas is everything that most expensive private islands owned by celebrities should be. Little Halls Pond Cay is blessed with an abundance of scenic beauty, including a lagoon surrounded by palm trees, and six untouched white sand beaches. The island also has a water body called ‘Heath’s Place’, named after the late Heath Ledger. The homes here are solar-powered.
** Blackadore Caye, Belize
Owned by: Leonardo DiCaprio ($1.75 m)
Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio purchased the island of Blackadore Cay in 2005. He paid over a million for it; the asking price was $1.75 million. The 104-acre Belizian island is a stone’s throw from the Great Barrier Reef. It appears that the environmentally-inclined DiCaprio has big plans for his private island.
** Ile Gagnon, Quebec, Canada
Owned by: Celine Dion (price not available)
Singer Celine Dion’s wondrous pipes have earned her a lot of money; enough for her to spend on a private island in her home province of Quebec. Ile Gagnon sits within the sleepy Iles River, providing the singer a happy break from the bustle of concerts and recording studios whenever she visits. The island houses a large mansion that is built in the style of French chateaus.
** White Bay Cay, Exuma Cays, Bahamas
Owned by: Tyler Perry, (price not available)
While other celebrities splashed out on private islands, Tyler Perry was not to be left behind. Although he already owned a private island, he decided to add to his tally by purchasing White Bay Cay in the Bahamas. As per reports, the multi-talented Perry is going all out to develop White Bay Cay. He has commissioned a 14,000-sq-ft Bali-style home on the island, in addition to five or six guest bungalows.
