American Express has announced a new initiative enabling Card members to ‘Pay with Points’ for their shopping and dining experience. The new ‘Pay with Points’ from American Express allows Cardmembers to enjoy real-time Membership Rewards redemption at the point of sale at over 750 leading retail and dining outlets. With merchant partners like Apple Premium Reseller stores, Bose, Croma, Reliance Digital, Shoppers’ Stop, Armani Jeans, Marks & Spencer, and several dining outlets at Cyber Hub (Gurgaon), Cardmembers can look forward to an enhanced shopping and dining experience.

This new initiative offers a simple and flexible way to instantly redeem their points.  Cardmembers need to notify the cashier at the end of their shopping or dining experience about their intent to use their points for all or part of their purchase.

Cardmembers can use their American Express Membership Reward points to shop at 750 retail outlets including Apple Premium Reseller stores across the country, and while dining at over 10 of their favorite outlets in Gurgaon. Participating restaurants include Abbey Road, Canton Spice, Farzi Café, Imperfecto, Kebab Express, Made in Punjab, Nooba, Sutra, Soi7, Café Delhi Heights and Zambar.

Manoj Adlakha, Head – Consumer Cards business & CEO, American Express Banking Corp explains.

What has been the response to these new initiatives?

American Express introduced this new idea recognizing the need of its Cardmembers and the brands they prefer in their daily lives. The initiative has already received an overwhelming response in a very short span of time as the new age consumer is looking for instant gratification and American Express endeavors to meet consumer preferences and trends. With this new initiative, American Express aims to take its reward redemption experience to the next level, leveraging unique technology to bring the rewards program alive at the most critical customer touchpoint – the physical point of sale.

Help us establish the success of these initiatives through data/number of transactions done etc.

We have just launched this and have received a good response. Having said that, it is too early to talk about the success of this.

Are such modes of doing transactions popular in the other countries? Please give us an overview. (Which countries started this first and when etc?)

American Express Pay with Points is offered in many AXP markets like United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina, Germany and now in India.

There are many ways American Express protects its customers from fraud. There are also some simple and important steps that one can take to help reduce risk.

¾     Monitor Account Activity Online: Accessing account online is a great way to stay up to date on recent charges and monitor account for irregular activity.

¾     Create Unique Passwords and Personal Identification Numbers: One should avoid using easily available information such as date of birth, or the last four digits of your Birth Year when creating passwords and personal identification numbers. There should be different passwords for various banking accounts. Updating passwords regularly is an important step to stay safe

¾     Bookmark the websites you visit most in your favorites: One should develop the habit of using favorites to navigate to the sites that is used frequently to perform financial transactions such as bank or credit card.

A fraudulent website (spoof site) will not be able to display one’s User ID, letting the person know that it is not the genuine American Express website.

Note: One should not use the Remember Me functionality on a public or shared computer, like at a public library.

¾     Avoid giving out personal information over the phone: This is especially true when the telephone call is initiated by another party. If any American Express Cardmember is contacted by someone who claims to be from American Express, cardholder can call the number on the back of the Card and enter the account number which will be routed to the appropriate department for assistance.
