Volkswagen India that unveiled its sub-compact sedan Ameo a day ahead of the Auto Expo 2016, today revealed its premium SUV – Tiguan – at the biennial event. The Tiguan never came to India, and the one that will come here will be the second generation model. The new-generation Volkswagen Tiguan is based on the company’s MQB platform that makes it about 50kgs lighter. The same platform also underpins other Volkswagen group cars including the Golf, Audi TT and Audi A3.
The Volkswagen Tiguan model, showcased at the Auto Expo 2016, will be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. Mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, this engine churns out 148bhp. The car also features a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. Though upon launch, this could also be offered with a front-wheel drive version.
With a new grille, LED head-lamps, all-new alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, sloping roof with roof rails, roof spoiler, LED tail-lamps, the car looks quite aggressive. While the global Volkswagen Tiguan is a 5-seater, the one coming to India could will be a 7-seater version that will also be launched in a few other markets.
With 50kg lighter platform, and efficient construction techniques, the new Volkswagen Tiguan is claimed to be better in terms of fuel efficiency and handling & performance. Though the company didn’t reveal its pricing, it is expected to be priced around Rs 25 lakh. At this price, it will rival other premium SUVs including Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
