A total of 8000 students from different engineering colleges took part at the Mahindra Baja SAEINDIA 2016, and 395 teams were formed out of which 179 reached the finale.
The 9th edition of the Mahindra BAJA SAEINDIA concluded on February 21, 2016 at Pithampur Indore. A total of 8000 students from different engineering colleges took part this year, and 395 teams were formed out of which 179 reached the finale. However, only 129 teams could make it to the Endurance round. The second edition of eBAJA, in which students build an electric vehicle, saw participation from 9 teams and was held on February 20 at the NATRiP facility at Pitampura near Indore.
While College of Engineering, Pune won the 2016 Baja SAEINDIA 2016, Alard College of Engineering, Pune and SRM University grabbed the second and third positions respectively. This year the teams were given a new track with natural hurdles spread over 5 kms, thus making it more challenging both for the vehicle and the one driving it.
On the other hand, the ‘Best eBAJA Team’ award was won by Smt. Kashibai Navale College of engineering, Pune. As mentioned earlier, this was the second edition of the eBAJA. This year a total of 11 colleges took part in the 2016 eBAJA, and 9 made it to the endurance round. The prize money for the winner, 1st runner up and second runner up in all the competition was Rs 60,000, Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively. As per the organisers, the total prize money for all the awards was about Rs 29.80 lakh.
College of Engineering, Pune bagged the Engineering Design award, while Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering, Bengaluru won the Go Green- Emissions Award. Special awards like Dronacharya award was given to the faculty advisor of Amity School of Engineering and Technology, New Delhi.
For people not in the know, the event takes place for three days starting with basic static evaluation round under which design, cost and marketing presentations are evaluated. In the final round, the teams then showcase their prototype of a rugged single seat, off-road recreational four-wheel vehicle in which their vehicles are evaluated on several parameters including engineering design, cost and technology. The objective of this competition is to provide real-world engineering design projects and challenges to budding automobile engineers.
The teams are given free hand to design their own transmissions with the only restriction being the speed limit of 60kmph The Dynamic Evaluation Round tests the vehicles for acceleration, speed, hill climb and manoeuvrability and the Durability Evaluation Round see the vehicles undergo endurance tests. The Endurance Event assesses each vehicle’s ability to operate continuously and at a speed over rough terrain containing obstacles in any weather conditions.
