With a top-speed of 190km/h, the Fiat Abarth Punto is claimed to touch the 100km/h mark from zero in mere 8.8 seconds.
Despite some new launches and dealership expansion, Fiat India has had a disappointing year so far. As a matter of fact, the company could manage to sell mere 4,204 units in the first six months of this fiscal year; and still holds a meagre 0.24 per cent market share. So to increase its sales, Fiat is now betting on affordable performance versions of its existing cars tuned by Abarth – the company’s performance division. After launching the completely built up unit (CBU) Abrth 595 Competizione in August, the company today (October 19, 2015) rolled out locally-made Fiat Abarth Punto and Abarth Avventura. Both the cars are priced at Rs. 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Powering both the vehicles, the Abarth Punto and Avventura, is a 1.4-litre T-Jet turbocharged petrol engine. The engine is is tuned to produce 145bhp and 212Nm with the Abarth Punto, and 140bhp and 210Nm with the the Abarth Avventura. With a top-speed of 190km/h, the Fiat Abarth Punto is claimed to touch the 100km/h mark from zero in mere 8.8 seconds. This makes it the most powerful hatchback in the country. With such an impressive power figure, the Abarth Punto is about 40bhp more powerful than the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI – only other hot-hatch available in the Indian market today. The Abarth Avventura, on the other hand, does 0-100km/h in 9.9 seconds.
Though the overall design of the Fiat Abarth Punto looks largely similar to the regular Punto, the company has lowered its ride height by 20mm, changed its brakes and stiffened its suspension to help it handle the extra power. The hot hatch gets Abarth badge, Abarth decals on both sides, 16-inch alloy wheels and wing mirrors & grille in contrast shade. The vehicle’s interior also gets some changes including sportier seats with contrast stitching and Abarth badge on steering wheel among several others.
The Fiat Abarth Avventura also receives all the changes given to the Punto hot hatch, save for Abarth badges. Though just like the regular version of the crossover, this one too gets plastic cladding around body, rear-mounted spare wheel and roof rails.
