In a bid to increase its market share in the Indian passenger car market, General Motors has plans to launch several new and facelifted Chevrolet cars in the next 2 years. At the ongoing Auto Expo 2016, General Motors has displayed two new derivatives of the Beat – Chevrolet Beat Essentia and the Activ. While the Chevrolet Beat Essentia is a sub-4 metre sedan, the Activ is the crossover version of the Beat.
Chevrolet Beat Essentia
General Motors already sells an entry-level sedan – Chevrolet Sail – in the country, but that failed to meet the company’s expectations. Now with the Chevrolet Beat Essentia, the company will lure buyers looking for a sedan at quite an affordable price. The Chevrolet Beat Essentia is based on the current-gen Beat hatchback, and thus borrows its engines as well from the latter. While the petrol model of the Chevy Beat Essentia sedan features the 1.2-litre STEC II engine that is good for 77bhp and 107Nm, the diesel mill is the 1.0L XSDE unit 56bhp and 142.5Nm.
Since the Chevrolet Beat Essentia will attract entry-level sedan buyers, it could be priced less than all of its rivals. The direct rival for the Essentia will be the upcoming Tata Kite sedan that too has made its debut at the Auto Expo 2016.
Chevrolet Beat Activ
The Chevrolet Beat Activ is a crossover version based on the hatchback. Expected to be the most affordable crossover, the Beat Activ will have no direct rival. Other crossovers including the Toyota Etios Cross, Hyundai i20 Active and Fiat Avventura feature more powerful engines, and target buyers looking for a premium hatchback crossover. The Chevrolet Beat Active, on the other hand, will attract buyers looking for a sporty looking crossover at an affordable price.
As far as the design is concerned, both the Beat Essentia and the Active crossover take inspiration from the new-generation Chevrolet Beat that will be launched in India in 2017. Both the cars feature Chevrolet’s new signature dual-port grille flanked by large, ‘elliptical headlamps’ that sweep back into the front fenders. While the Beat Essentia features an extended boot, the Cross has a sporty and curvy hatch-like tail-gate. The Beat Activ also gets roof rails.
