About 10 years ago, Audi created a new segment called the A5 for such customers who wanted the best of both worlds—the driving fun of a sports car like the TT and the luxury associated with executive sedans like the A4 and A6. On Thursday, Audi drove in this debonair product to India, by launching three variants—A5 Sportback, A5 Cabriolet and S5 Sportback, priced at Rs 54.02 lakh, Rs 67.51 lakh and Rs 70.6 lakh, respectively—targeting the young, affluent customers. “The A5 range will definitely catch the attention of young-minded achievers who have made a statement with their uncompromised way of thinking,” said Rahil Ansari, head, Audi India, during the launch in Mumbai.
These cars are defined by their unique styling. For example, they have an athletic design, bold shoulder lines, LED headlights and rear lights with dynamic turn indicators, pronounced bulges over the wheel arches, and a panoramic sunroof. The A5 Cabriolet has the one-touch roof opening function that opens the soft top in 15 seconds and closes it in 18 seconds, even while driving at speeds of up to 50kph.
Inside the cabin, the horizontal architecture of the instrument panel creates a sense of space (therefore luxury), the leather steering wheel has a three-spoke design with multifunction buttons and gear-shift paddles, the front seats are electrically adjustable and the S5 Sportback has the driver-side memory function, they get three-zone automatic air-conditioning, interior mirrors with automatic anti-glare action and more.
While the A5 Sportback and A5 Cabriolet are powered by the 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine that churns out 190bhp of output, the S5 Sportback is a beast—it is equipped with the 3.0-litre TFSI quattro tiptronic petrol engine producing 354bhp of power.
The 0-100kph acceleration times are 7.9 seconds (A5 Sportback), 7.8 seconds (A5 Cabriolet) and an incredibly fast 4.7 seconds for the S5 Sportback.
The A5 Sportback gets the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, the A5 Cabriolet the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission with quattro (all-wheel drive), and the S5 Sportback has the eight-speed tiptronic transmission with quattro as standard.
The A5 range is equipped with Audi Virtual Cockpit (12.3-inch screen; 10GB storage) and Audi Smartphone Interface (lets you access phone apps).
