E-commerce giant Amazon has claimed that its three-day ‘Great Indian Republic Day Sale’ from January 21-23 recorded three times higher turnover than the previous year’s sales during the same period, with mobiles being the top selling category followed by apparel.
A release from Amazon India said, that over 65% of its orders come from outside of top 8 metros with cities like Pune, Jaipur, Thane, Patna, Surat , Nagpur etc. In the Amazon Fashion sale category, the tier 1 cities saw an increase of nearly 2.5x in terms of ordered units between January 2015 and 2016; with the top cities being the four metros, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Thane, Gurgaon, Noida and Chandigarh. Similarly, there was a 4.8x increase in ordered units from Tier II cities for Amazon Fashion sale.
In terms of shopping traffic on mobile continued to be 70% and the Amazon shopping app became the number one app on iOS and Android platforms.
According to Amazon, most categories witnessed growth up to 9x as compared to their daily run rate. In the apparel category, the first day of the Great India Sale (GIS), Amazon fashion surpassed the last biggest day of the October 2015 Diwali sale on the website.
According to Amazon, all the categories under its Fashion sale have shown over 200% increase in comparison to last year’s January sale. The highest growth was observed in Luggage, Watches, Apparel and Handbags as compared to last January sale.
The jewelry and handbags recorded over 3x growth in January 2016 GIS over last year’s Republic Deals Parade sale.
The Indian e-commerce industry is witnessing intense competition among the three big players – Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal. Each of the player are offering deep discounts and enhancing the user experience to increase the traffic flow into their sites.
