interaction, he tells Sudhir Chowdhary that increasing demand for connected devices, rising awareness and penetration of smart devices are some of the factors driving the growth for IoT and M2M
solutions in the market. Excerpts:
Internet of Things is a buzzword in today’s marketplace. Is it big business too?
Definitely. Internet of Things is the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate, sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment. The burgeoning markets of energy management, smart grids, sensor networks and other intelligent systems, coupled with advances in IoT platforms and big data, have given birth to many innovations, start-up companies and big company acquisitions. In fact the opportunities are so vast, that for many companies, coming up with a clear strategy on how to implement this new technology is a huge step. Recent research conducted by Forrester in the retails industry found that 96% of retail decision makers are hoping to make the necessary changes to adopt IoT solutions in the near future, but over half are concerned about integration challenges.

Security and privacy concerns on IoT deployments must be addressed for IoT to succeed. If the proper balance is not struck between the benefits of the IoT and individual privacy and security, the evolution of the IoT is likely to be seriously compromised. The future is all about the IoT. When companies plan their IoT strategy, they need to think how they can better secure the devices, serve their users, and make sure that it makes them more productive while managing IoT properly.
What are your expectations from the Indian market?
As an enabler of IoT solutions, we are already a leading player in the above mentioned segments and going forward we see growth coming from government’s smart city projects. Smart cities would need IoT applications to become smart and IoT applications have a great potential to transform businesses. In India, it is expected that IoT revenues will be driven by opportunities in making buildings and cities intelligent. IT services companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS and Tech Mahindra are working on designing and developing solutions to make smart cities.
What will be your strategy going forward for the Indian market?
Telecom, energy and automotive telematics are our key areas. 4G LTE is going to be a game changer in India. With the operators in India rolling out 4G networks, LTE is going to play a leading role in the telecom segment. Here Telit is well positioned to cater to the needs of customers’ future-proof design platforms with its set of LTE modules that provide seamless connectivity to multiple frequency bands across different carriers.
We will also continue a strong push for GNSS products. With the launch of Telit module Jupiter SE873, which tracks signals from both GPS and GLONASS satellites, Telit has set a new standard for applications in the navigation and tracking segments last year.

How is the Indian market responding to IoT/M2M solutions?
Increasing demand for connected devices, rising awareness, penetration of smart devices are some of the factors driving the growth for IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions in the market. New government initiatives such as smart cities project coupled with increasing IT spending is further expected to fuel the IoT/M2M market in India. The country is also exhibiting installation of 14 smart grids and 130 million smart meters in the coming times, which would spur the IoT/M2M market in the utility application space.
How does India compare with the other markets in IoT space?
IoT/M2M communications market has matured in Europe and the US. In India it is the beginning stage and use of IoT applications is on the rise. We expect within the next 2-5 years when most of the government IoT projects see light of the day, one would then witness the real potential of IoT applications.
