Bharti Airtel said it will offer double the data to its prepaid subscribers for a few rupees extra, as the country's biggest telecommunications company aims to increase users and usage of high-margin internet services among its subscribers.

Bharti Airtel data packAirtel double-data pack: For Rs 296, customers will be provided with 2GB data, of which they could use 1GB during the day, and the remainder during the night, the company said.

Bharti Airtel on Wednesday said it will offer double the data to its prepaid subscribers for a few rupees extra, as the country’s biggest telecommunications company aims to increase users and usage of high-margin internet services among its subscribers.

For instance, consumers subscribing to the Rs 259 data pack were until now offered 1GB of 3G/4G data with a validity of 28-days. But with the new data plan, for Rs 296, customers will be provided with 2GB data, of which they could use 1GB during the day, and the remainder during the night, the company said.

“This effectively doubles the data limit of the pack to 2GB, representing a saving of 30% compared to the current pack with the similar benefits.”

The new plans are likely to put pressure on the already declining realisation rates for 3G/4G data, though it can spur more usage. During the January-March quarter, Bharti Airtel’s realisation for every megabit of data declined to 22.87 paise/MB compared to 23.77paise/MB a quarter earlier, and 26.82paise/MB a year earlier, according to the company’s earnings report.

However, its usage per subscriber had gone up 859MB/ month from 843MB/ month a quarter earlier, and 656MB/month a year earlier.
