Accenture eyes digital transformation, implements innovation agenda

Accenture has engulfed the innovation agenda right through the entire organisation as it looks for the right solutions to enable the digital transformation across sectors

Digital transformation is the defacto agenda for companies today cutting across sectors as they look for innovative solutions which will keep them ahead of the curve as the requirement from customers is far different from what it was in the recent past. The avalanche spread of smartphones with people always connected to social media has created a new dynamic where companies need to innovate faster than ever before to the new kind of requirement.

The answer now lies in how companies are going to go turn digital and this journey is being helped by technology enterprises.

Accenture, the global consulting and technology services major, has embarked on a journey where it is closely connected with its clients to bring the best of the breed innovative digital solutions. This is an exercise where Accenture has spread the gospel of innovation through the entire organisation to remain ahead in a hyper competitive environment.

Mohan Sekhar, senior managing director, Technology—Delivery Centres for Technology in India, Accenture, said, “Digital is here to stay. All our clients need help in this digital transformation and disruption. We are helping them to be digital enabled.”

Today, companies cutting across sectors be it telecom, healthcare, financial services, manufacturing or pharma, are in various stages of the digital transformation. The speed of the transformation depends on the market environment in a particular sector. For example, banks in all probability might innovate faster on the digital agenda when compared to others.

Raghavan Iyer, lead—Innovation Council, Accenture in India; managing director—Technology, Accenture and Avanade Global Delivery Network, said, “There is a two speed IT journey among enterprises where on the one hand they are maintaining the existing infrastructure but also looking at outperforming on the digital agenda.” According to him, the underlying flavour in this digital change is: change fast and adopt quickly.

However, this entire digital theme is being driven by the innovation agenda within Accenture. Sekhar said, “Innovation is a cultural shift where everybody should be thinking about it.” To drive this innovation agenda, Accenture is bringing this about not just among its employees but also through partnerships with technology peers such as Microsoft, SAP and also through collaboration with startup community and research bodies.

For the employees of Accenture there is a innovation contest where everybody can participate. Iyer said, “We threw a  broad challenge to employees where they can focus on three main areas: industry, technology and delivery.” He felt that every single person in Accenture is capable of coming out with the innovative solution, “everybody has the spark and we need to just ignite.”

Accenture has come out with exhaustive innovation framework where ideas are funneled, filtered and the best among the lot is chosen. The key USP for Accenture in driving the innovation agenda is how well it will work with the clients. The innovation summit of Accenture held in Bengaluru recently in fact had its clients as the jury members. According to Iyer, out of the 4,000 ideas it received about 500 are being implemented  at various client locations.
Innovation can never be achieved over a course of few months but is a continuous process which takes some time to achieve certain level of maturity. According to Sekhar, innovation agenda within Accenture has become mainstream and reached all levels while adding that the second critical factor is whether innovation has reached the clients. Or as Iyer said, “We want more ideas to come and want people to fail fast.”

According to Accenture executives, the innovation fabric is now well set within the company and best of the ideas are also coming from the lowest level also.
