The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was arrested by police and sent to central jail in Srinagar, reported Times Now channel on Thursday evening. The arrest took place just one day after the separatist leaders had announced that the group will hold a protest march on September 9 to NIA headquarters in Delhi. Apart from Malik, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had threatened to stage a sit-in outside the NIA headquarters in Delhi. Earlier in the day, NIA had conducted a raid at the residence of separatists Shabir Shah’s close aide Chowdhary Abdul Razzaq in Jammu in relation to terror funding.

Malik has been a controversial figure in the state. He has accused the government of foisting one major issue or the other every month on the people of Kashmir. He had also compared NIA to Gabbar Singh, the villain from Bollywood movie Sholay. NIA has recently conducted many raids in connection with separatist leaders.

Malik was arrested earlier this year in March as well. Back then, the arrest made from Malik’s office. “A posse of policemen raided Abi Guzar office of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in the heart of Srinagar and arrested Malik to desist him from spearheading the poll boycott campaign,” a JKLF spokesman had said, as per PTI.

He was the arrested from his residence in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir in May this year. Even then Malik was shifted to the central jail in Srinagar. This arrest came a day after Malik visited the residences of slain Hizbul Mujahideen militants Sabzar Ahmed Bhat and Faizan Muzaffar in Tral area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Soimoh area of Tral.
