Saksham Yadav, who got seriously injured in a car crash today, is a powerlifter who won a gold medal for India at powerlifting world championship held in Moscow in December 2017. Saksham had also won a gold medal in the junior category in 2016. He is a resident of Nagloi in north Delhi. As per Saksham’s Facebook profile, his nickname is Aryan. The languages he knows are Hindi and Haryanvi (the dialect of people of state of Haryana). Saksham is now fighting for his life even as those of his comrades were snuffed out in tragic circumstances.

Notably, earlier today, four weight-lifters were killed in the accident on Delhi-Panipat National Highway-1. Saksham Yadav was seriously injured along with another weightlifter, a police official said. Yadav and the other injured were rushed to the Max Hospital in New Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh for treatment.

The police officer informed that the car in which Saksham and other weight-lifters were traveling from Panipat towards Delhi, first hit a divider and then crashed into an electricity pole. Due to severe impact, the car’s roof was blown away. The official added that the driver was speeding despite dense fog in the area. A number of areas of concern have been raised by authorities about the crash. It has also been reported that all the athletes were on their way to an eating joint early in the morning.

According to police, the accident took place near the Singhu border in Alipur police station area. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said the deceased were identified as Tikamchand, Saurabh, Akash and Harish Roy. The injured were identified as Saksham Yadav, a national-level powerlifter, and Rohit, he added. Yadav was taken to the Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, in northwest Delhi. A hospital source informed PTI, “He came to the emergency department where he was administered first-aid and stabilised. He apparently was later taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre.”

A senior doctor at the AIIMS trauma said that Yadav’s condition is extremely critical. He has top one head injuries and severe internal bleeding. He is being attended by a team of doctors, he said. It was Rohit’s birthday and the friends were celebrating it, the police said. It is being probed whether it is a case of drunken driving since there were some liquor bottles found in the vehicle, they said.

This is a great loss for the country at large and the sporting fraternity in particular.
