Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis lent support to the under fire Housing Minister Prakash Mehta on Thursday saying that he cannot be accused of corruption merely on the basis of a file noting made by him and that the allegations being made against the senior BJP leader are politically motivated, reported PTI. This statement from the Maharashtra CM came after both Congress and NCP sought for Prakash Mehta’s removal over allegedly allowing unauthorised transfer of extra building rights in a slum rehabilitation authority (SRA) project in south Mumbai, originally granted to slum dwellers, to project affected people (PAPs), apparently to favour a developer. Here is all you need to know:

1. Born on April 22, 1959, Prakash Mehta is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader. He has previously served as the President for Mumbai BJP Unit and iss currently the State Cabinet Minister for Housing Department. This is Mehta’s sixth consecutive term as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra.

2. Mehta who comes from Gujarat made his first contact with politics when he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). Between 175 and 1977, he actively participated and volunteered during the National Emergency and Corruption Movement launched by Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan.

3. Mehat recently came into news as he had wrongly mentioned on the file that he had kept the CM in loop about the transfer, which was denied by Fadnavis. The issue was raised by Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde (NCP).

4. This forced Maharashtra chief minister to order an inquiry against the minister over alleged violation of norms in a slum redevelopment project.

5. However, yesterday Fadnavis clarified that Mehta had only given his remarks on file over which no action was taken so there is no question of his resignation. “Mehta had merely given his remarks on the file, over which no further action was taken. If the Opposition is still asking for his resignation, then these charges are politically motivated,” Fadnavis told the Legislative Council.
