Months after the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, another student of the university has gone missing. Mukul Jain is missing from the campus since January 8, according to police. The 26-year-old student is pursuing his PhD under a guide from IGNOU and a co-guide from the School of Life Sciences, JNU. A missing report in the case was registered on January 8 evening at Vasant Kunj police station. PTI today reported a senior police officer as saying it was suspected that Jain was having some problems in his relationship and till now no foul play has been suspected. Reports have claimed that Jain was last seen at School of Life Sciences lab around 12 pm and a CCTV footage has shown him leaving the campus around 12.30 pm.
When Jain failed to reach home until Monday evening, his family had approached the university authorities. According to a report by India Today, during the examination of CCTV footage, authorities had reportedly found him leaving the campus at around 12.30pm from Gate no.4. Surprisingly, Jain’s mobile phone and wallet were later found in the laboratory.

According to NDTV, Jain’s friends told police that he had left his mobile phone and wallet in labouratory. It further said Jain had returned to the campus after visiting his family in Ghaziabad over the weekend. Police have found that Jain is a resident of Ghaziabad and he was dating a fellow student from college. However, he had recently ended the relationship after giving in to his family pressure, according to India Today.
Hindustan Times quoted an investigator into the case as saying that Jain was “allegedly upset” over some differences with the woman, whom he had befriended recently. The investigator said police were told that Jain wanted to “confront the woman” but he was “unable to contact her” till he was seen on the campus.
Jain’s co-guide in JNU is Professor Shweta Saran. She told HT that he was registered with IGNOU and he used to visit JNU’s School of Life Sciences to work in the lab. This was also confirmed by his guide at IGNOU Kaustuva Barik.
IN October 2016, another JNU student Najeeb Ahmed had gone missing from Mahi-Mandvi hostel of the university following a reported scuffle with some other students, who were allegedly affiliated to the ABVP. Ahmed was a student of M.Sc in Biotechnology.
