A video grab of the incident

Tripura Congress president Pradyot Dev Burman has landed in a controversy after he was seen slapping a supporter of IPFT, an ally of ruling BJP in the state, inside a police station on Thursday. The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) supporter was arrested by the police earlier in the day on the charge of trying to attack the convoy of Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate and sister of Pradyot Dev Burman, Pragya Dev Burman in Khowai district. She is the Congress candidate for East Tripura (ST) constituency.

In the CCTV footage, the man could be seen sitting on a bench in a police station as Pradyot Dev Burman enters the room along with his supporters. The man stands up and greets the Congress leader with folded hands when the later suddenly slaps the former. Cops standing nearby soon intervenes and separates the two. Pradyot Dev Burman walks away after treating him with an angry rant.

Here’s the video of the incident:

The incident took place when Pragya was returning from a rally.

Narrating the incident, Pragya told the reporters, “We were returning after attending a public meeting at Tulashikhar area. An IPFT supporter tried to hurl a stone at my car. It seems there were more people with him.”

Senior BJP leader and state minister Ratan Lal Nath showed the CCTV footage of Tulashikhar police station where the accused was taken after his arrest and Congress state president slapped him.

Pradyot Dev Burman, however, remained unapologetic and termed the accused a goon. Pradyot alleged that the accused and many others were trying to attack his sister and BJP has been trying to protect him.

Earlier, the state Congress chief had condemned the attack on his sister and alleged the paid goons carried out the attack on her.

The IPFT denied any attack on the convoy by the arrested supporter, BJP denounced the incident and the CCTV footage showed that the state Congress president took law into his hands and wanted to send the message that he would terrorise and attack his political opponents.

The East Tripura (ST) constituency will go to polls on April 23.
