Earlier in the day, Samajwadi leader and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav gave a shocking statement about martyrs. In a highly insensitive comment, he gave a political angle to the sacrifice of jawans who have lost their lives in recent events. While speaking to news agency ANI, Akhilesh said people have lost lives from almost every state but no one was martyred from Gujarat. “UP, Madhya Pradesh, Dakshin Bharat har jagah se shaheed hue hain, Gujarat ka koi jawan shaheed hua ho toh batao (Jawans from UP, Madhya Pradesh, South India and other parts of the country have lost their lives but tell me whether anyone has been martyred from Gujarat),” he was quoted saying by news agency ANI.

The party is having a tough time as it lost the state assembly elections earlier this year despite forming an alliance with Congress. Samajwadi Party managed to win just 47 seats which were considerably lower than 224 seats it won in 2012. Ahead of the elections, the party was also affected because of a dispute within the Yadav family as differences between Akhilesh and his father Mulayam and uncle Shivpal became public.
