In yet another shocking case of a legislator taking advantage of his position to bypass rules by using strong-arm tactics to threaten and scare authorities and thereby evade paying for the use of services that the common man has to pay. With a number of goons accompanying such leaders, the fear of violence is all-pervading and those in authority quickly realise that they face the prospect of a beating and hence it would be in their interest to ignore this case of violation. This reprehensible behaviour has been seen many times before and was evident today too and this time it involves a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sriram Bhinchar belonging to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Makrana in Rajasthan, which is run by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

MLA Sriram Bhinchar with a convoy of cars, which reportedly consisted of as many as 50 cars, others said there were more, arrived at a toll point on a highway. However, when he was stopped by the toll authorities and asked to pay for his passage, the MLA, dressed in spotless white like most politicians, got out of his car and proceeded to browbeat toll collectors and told them to let them all pass without charging toll. Shockingly, in the video that caught the entire episode as it happened, the MLA could be seen pushing and shoving the toll collectors around. The MLA was backed up by his supporters who could be seen in the background ready to take things in their hands. Clearly outnumbered and scared of the consequences, the collectors refused to force the issue.

As soon as they realised that they had triumphed the MLA and the rest of his entourage zipped through the toll depriving the toll company as well as the government of revenue. That this was a crime is not an arguement that needs even be made. The problem is that the MLA, who is one of the highest government officials in the state violated the rules and what is worse, he is expected to get away with this crime with impunity, especially as he belongs to the ruling dispensation.

The shocking part is that at the highest echelons of the BJP, its President Amit Shah and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been trying to sell their development agenda to the country and yet here is an MLA from their own party who is busy destroying that very dream.
