Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli announced a support of Rs 2 crore annually through the Virat Kohli Foundation for players from other sports in India. While addressing a press conference on Friday evening along with Sanjiv Goenka and Pullela Gopichand, Kohli announced a new initiative called RPSG Sports honours under which the sports journalists association, sporting legends and fans will identify one player from each sport who will not only be awarded but will also be provided with financial support. The unique awards will be given on November 11 said Sanjiv Goenka and the categories regarding it will be provided soon.
While addressing reporters, Kohli said that he has always believed that we need to promote other sports in India but that is not going to happen without proper facilities. He further added that we also need to provide confidence to these players. The 28-year-old batsman added that this is the reason why they have decided to come up with a platform where they will identify one sportsperson from each sport and will look after them, nurture them and track their growth.
“As far as Virat Kohli Foundation goes, we’ll be providing support of Rs 2 crore for these sportspersons every year and this amount might even go up,” he added, The Indian skipper said that it is an honour to launch something in association with Sanjiv Goenka. “I am also honoured to be with Gopichand sir. Its commendable what you are doing,” he added.
Talkng about the poor condition of other sports in India, Kohli said, “when you go to other countries, they have a similar mindset about all the sports but growing up in India, I can accept that I didn’t even know the rules of other sports.”
Speaking at the event, Gopichand said that it is great to see that the sports journalists will be a part of the journey because they are tracking these players throughout the year so they will make sure that no one is missed.
