Municipal Corporation Nagar Nigam Elections, Mayor Poll Results 2017: The results of municipal corporation elections in Uttar Pradesh were declared. Varanasi BJP candidate Mridula Jaiswal has won the mayoral post. Varanasi, which eminent literary figure Mark Twain once called as the city older than history has elected a women Mayor. The city is known for its religious significance with temples, ghats and educational institutions is also the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP’s victory here is the reflection of peoples faith in the Yogi Adityanath government in the state. BJP has fought these elections with great priority and the party will definitely get a boost for upcoming polls in Gujarat. Ina similar vein, Union Minister Smriti Irani today hits out at Rahul Gandhi by saying that Congress has failed to win in civic polls then, how will they win in Gujarat.
Varanasi, previously known as Benaras is a modernised city as well and with modernisation comes the challenges of managing the city’s infrastructure The common problem faced by its citizens are potholed roads, electricity crisis and traffic jams. The results of the civic polls are of utmost importance to Varanasi as BJP has formed the government with a massive victory in March earlier this year. The elections are also called by many analysts as the report card of Yogi Adityanath government. Also, this is the first time that BJP has released a manifesto for civic body polls.
Earlier in March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a rally in Varanasi and promised a complete makeover of the city. As it was an election rally so he accused previous SP government of negligence towards Varanasi. What could possibly affect the outcome of civic polls apart from infrastructure issues are Modi government most popular policy of demonetisation. The weavers in Varanasi faced a lot of problems due to note ban. PM Modi had earlier announced a package of Rs 2,375 crore for 16 co-operative banks so that they can give loans to weavers easily.
All this will definitely impact the outcome of civic body polls in Varanasi. As of now, BJP’s mayor candidate is leading.
