In a disturbing and shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh, at least 40 people have been infected with HIV in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao allegedly after a quack used a common syringe. UP Health Minister has taken note of the incident and the probe is underway.
In an alarming case of medical apathy from Uttar Pradesh, at least 40 people of the same district have been detected as HIV positive so far, with officials fearing that the njumber could go up further. Officials cited by news agencies said the outbreak in Unnao district was caused due to the use of the same cyringe on multiple patients by a quack, infecting them with the dreadful disease. The doctors have expressed fear that such an outbreak may lead to an epidemic. Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh has taken note of the incident and has ordered a probe into the matter, ANI reported, adding that the minister has assured of necessary action and a crackdown on such ‘quacks’ across the state.
“The matter is being investigated. Action will be taken against culprits and those who practice without a license. Since it’s a transit point, HIV carriers are likely to come there. So we’re mapping truck drivers who come there and offer treatment to them,” Singh told ANI.
As per officials, the quack used a single syringe for injection in the name of cheaper treatment. The numbers of HIV patients are likely to increase with more check-ups to follow. “40 positive cases have been found. If proper tests are done, at least 500 cases would come up. It is being told that the people here used to go to a quack for treatment of diseases. He used a single syringe on all of them,” Bangarmau Councillor Sunil told ANI. The patients have been referred to Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) centre in Kanpur.
The truth behind this disturbing medical apathy was revealed after a health camp in the village in November 2017 which discovered that a ‘high number’ of people were carrying HIV symptoms.

The accused quack is said to be on the run after the FIR was filed. The incident has brought the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government under scanner as this is not the first instance where people have suffered. Earlier, nearly 65 children admitted in BRD Medical College of Gorakhpur (Yogi Adityanath’s constituency) lost their lives due to lack of oxygen supply at the Uttar Pradesh hospital which was allegedly stopped when the hospital failed to clear its dues of over Rs 68 lakh.
