Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress-Samajwadi Party (SP) alliance for cheating and lying to people about being ahead in the Uttar Pradesh polls uptil the second phase of elections. While addressing a rally in Jhansi, ahead of UP elections, she said, “Opponent parties have shown themselves ahead in the opinion poll and surveys, all this is managed by them. Due to its wrong policies, Congress had to lose power in Centre and in several states,” she added. Criticising BJP for campaigning in UP, she said that it is not even ethical on their part to do that. “BJP ko toh vote maangne ka naitik adhikaar hi nahi hai,” she exclaimed.

Mayawati also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for playing with people’s emotion by calling himself UP’s adopted son. “People will punish the BJP for its failure to fulfil its promises of 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The people will not give their blessings to him. He may call the people of UP his mother-father or himself the adopted son. He may do as much drama as he wants but people will not be moved,” she said.

Recently, a video of Mayawati in which she is talking about the Muslim community as being extremists of sorts went viral. She denied having said anything like that and also accused her opponent for spreading this video to mislead people of UP. Also, a rumour went around when SP’s Akhilesh Yadav said that BSP will ally with BJP post polls, to which Mayawati retorted, she “will prefer to sit in the Opposition instead of joining hands with anyone” while urging minority voters to back her party. She said the condition of women will suffer and so will law and order if that happens. The next four phases of polling will be held on February 23, 27 and on March 4 and 8. Counting of votes will take place on March 11.
