Under the banner of '27 Saal UP Behal', Rahul is expected to raise issues like floods, the incumbent government's failure to provide a subsequent solution to it and others.
Ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is set to take a ‘mahayatra’ in the state from September 6, covering as many as 233 assembly constituencies in order to push his party’s agenda. His programme was announced by AICC general secretary Ghulam nabi Azad, saying that the Gandhi scion will cover 2500 km in nearly 25-days long yatra.
Tweeting about his 3-day visit to Amethi, Rahul on Tuesday morning said that will be there from August 31 to September 2 and looks forward to meet everyone there. He is scheduled to stay at the Munshigunj Guest House in Amethi and will attend several political and non-political functions during his stay. While Shiela Dikshit is the chief ministerial candidate for Congress, Rahul’s roadshow comes after party President Sonia Gandhi kick-started the party’s campaign earlier this month.
State President Raj Babbar and Dikshit are already holding separate yatras, while its is said that Rahul’s rally is organized so that he raise the concerns of farmers. Under the banner of ’27 Saal UP Behal’, Rahul is expected to raise issues like floods, the incumbent government’s failure to provide a subsequent solution to it and others.
A senior leader said the yatra would be a mix of such interaction with locals, public meetings, and padyatras. “The first phase will conclude in Lucknow. Then it would progress towards western UP,” the leader added.
Asked if the Congress vice president would visit Ayodhya as part of the mahayatra, Azad evaded a direct answer saying, “He would visit whatever places that would come in between and not to create any controversy out of it. In 21 districts Rahul will have ‘khaat sabhas’ also while there will be road shows in numerous large towns and cities.”
Taking a swipe at Rahul Gandhi over his proposed ‘mahayatra’ in UP, BJP said that the exercise is aimed at helping Samajwadi Party as he wanted to return the favour after its leaders worked to ensure his win from Amethi in the Lok Sabha polls. “This mahayatra is to help SP win by cutting into anti-
incumbency votes. Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav had done Rahul Gandhi a favour by ensuring his win in the Lok Sabha poll and he is now trying to return the favour,” said National Secretary Shrikant Sharma.
