Two brothers from Haryana have been arrested in Australia for the fatal stabbing of a 22-year-old MTech student from India, Navjeet Sandhu.
“Brothers Abhijeet and Robin Gartan were arrested in Goulburn with the assistance of NSW Police,” the Victoria Police said in an official statement.
The incident occurred in the Melbourne suburb of Ormond, where Sandhu lost his life in a confrontation over rent-related issues involving a group of Indian students.
Both the victim and the suspects hailed from Haryana’s Karnal.
According to Sandhu’s uncle, Navjeet was fatally stabbed in the chest while attempting to mediate the dispute between his friend and another student. The altercation turned violent, resulting in Navjeet’s tragic demise and injuries to his 30-year-old friend.
Navneet had been pursuing his studies in Australia for the past one-and-a-half years, for which his father, a farmer, had sacrificed a portion of their land to finance his education. He was to visit his home for vacations in July.
Earlier, Victoria Police had issued details and photographs of the two brothers sought in connection with the stabbing incident in Ormond. Abhijeet, 26, and Robin Gartan, 27, were both described as having a solid build, standing at 170cm tall, with black hair.
