He is a bus conductor by profession, but his passion lies in something else. M Yoganathan, a bus conductor from Coimbatore, has planted more than 38,000 trees in 28 years. His has been working with Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation (TNSTC) for the last 18 years and the only reason that he has not done more for nature is because of the limitation imposed by his meagre income.

Yoganathan, covers the ’70’ route from Gandhipuram to Marudhamalai daily, and has this undying passion for trees and greenery after he saw the Nilgiris. “I am a native of Mayiladuthurai near Nagapattinam. I was amazed by the beauty of the Nilgiris where I worked as a sales representative after finishing school. After witnessing trees being smuggled out, I had even staged a protest against it. Such events ignited the spark in me to work on conserving the environment,” Yoganathan told The Times of India.Even after moving to Coimbatore from Kodanad, he did not stop working for conservation of the environment. Yoganathan has received many awards including the Eco Warrior Award from the Government of India and state award.

That’s not all, the green crusader also takes out time for eco-conservation work and many environment-related activities. “I take leaves quite often, but only for environment-related activities. You won’t believe I have been transferred so many times that I have lost the count. I take my weekly offs on Monday, which helps me address students at educational institutions”, Yoganathan told The Times of India. But despite all his efforts, Yoganathan isn’t able to plant saplings in his house. He said that he lives in a rented house and isn’t allowed to plant trees. He has so far received no help from the government and is able to continue due to his wife and children, ToI quoted him as saying.
