Congress leader Manish Tewari on Wednesday alleged that civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad is a victim of political persecution for raising matters related to the Gujarat riots.

Tewari, who was reacting to reports of the CBI registering a case against Setalvad for allegedly receiving funds from foreign entities without prior permission from the government, said all progressive, right thinking and secular people who believe in the idea of India must stand up in her support.

“Teesta Setalvad is being subject to a political persecution. All these cases which are being made on her is retribution for raising the matters connected with the Gujarat riots,” he added.

The FIR also names Teesta’s husband Javed Anand, businessman Gulam Mohammed Peshimam and Sabrang Communications and Publishing.

The CBI is currently examining Sabrang’s documents and bank account details, with media reports speculating that the trio may soon be questioned by the agency.
