A Goa session court in Mapusa will resume hearing the case of rape accused Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal. The court is scheduled to begin hearing in the case around 2:30 pm according to Zee News. Tejpal had requested the session court under CrPC Section 327(2), to hold the rape proceedings against him in-camera. Agreeing to his plea, the session court had sometime back granted his request. Tejpal’s lawyers had filed an application under section 327 (3) of Criminal Procedure Code (which provides for in-camera trial of rape cases) seeking to bar the media from covering the trial.
Tejpal has been accused of raping a woman journalist during an event in Goa in 2013 who was working with Tehelka magazine, of which Tejpal was editor-in-chief. Goa crime branch had filed charge sheet in the case in 2014. Tejpal, a high-profile journalist, has been charged under IPC sections 354-A (sexual harassment), 341 and 342 (wrongful restraint) and 376 (rape), according to PTI.
On January 17, 2015, the Supreme Court had stayed the trial against Tejpal in connection with his alleged role in a sexual assault case for a period of three weeks, according to ANI. The SC bench had asked Tejpal to refrain from delaying the trials in the future.
