Tamil Nadu crisis: Caretaker Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has taken on AIADMK interim chief Sasikala and said that he will prove his strength in the assembly to remain in chief minister’s post. To do that, Panneerselvam will need to get the support of as many party MLAs as possible and hope that the ones who side with Sasikala, and vote against him, are not enough to affect the party’s majority in the assembly. O Panneerselvam after raising a flag of revolt against Sasikala on February 8 addressed a press conference and said, “I will prove my strength in the assembly.” AIADMK party’s strength in the state Assembly is 134 seats while DMK holds 89 seats. Panneerselvam claims the support of 65 MLAs.

However, he also got sacked by Sasikala as AIADMK treasurer for that. In his attack on Sasikala in a late night development on Tuesday, Panneerselvam claimed that he was forced to resign as Tamil Nadu CM at Sasikala’s behest. However, Sasikala refuted all allegations and said that she had not forced him to quit and what he was saying was absolutely incorrect.

While many MLAs have aligned with Sasikala, the tide is expected to turn in the wake of Election Commission hinting that there was no mention about the post of interim chief in AIADMK constitution and that translates into her being removed. However, no clarity as yet has emerged on this move. Panneerselvaam has announced that the election will be held soon for the ‘permanent’ general secretary post of AIADMK soon.

That Sasikala supporters are in a hurry to get her sworn in as TN CM was clear from DMK leader TKS Elangovan who criticised Governor C Vidyasagar Rao for not turning up on time for the swearing-in ceremony of AIADMK supremo V.K. Sasikala today. Elangovan also told ANI that the recent developments show that there is a clear divide in the party and that the majority of the MLAs are aligning with Sasikala.

On the other hand, AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan extended his support to Panneerselvam and said that “my conscience as Amma loyalist made me join O Panneerselvam”. Expressing confidence in having a majority, Maitreyan says, the numbers will be decided on the floor of the state Assembly, not on roads.

DMK’s Stalin also responded to Sasikala’s allegation that he had a role to play in sowing dissent within the party. Stalin said a strict action should be taken against the people who had forced O Panneerselvam to resign. Stalin said DMK would function not as an ‘enemy’ but as an opposition party and support a functional government in this time of crisis.

Sasikala, on the other hand, held the opposition responsible for the upheaval in their party. She said that she saw the DMK leader and Pannerselvam exchanging smiles and warmth in a recent assembly session.

Panneerselvam said that he had never gone against AIADMK, and the people who are siding with Sasikala are spreading lies about him.
