Sushma Swaraj row: The Congress on Monday alleged that former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah.
“It seems like Lalit Modi has connections with the Prime Minister and Amit Shah. We want to know what the relationship between the Prime Minister, Amit Shah and Lalit Modi is,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewaala.
“Doesn’t this make the External Affairs Minister an abettor to the crime and shouldn’t an FIR be filed? The Prime Minister has lost the right to continue in his post after these facts have come to light,” he added.
He further said that it was hard to believe that the Prime Minister was unaware of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s action.
“It’s hard to believe that a Prime Minister, who runs the Foreign Affairs Ministry with the External Affairs Minister didn’t know of an absconder being helped. It’s unprecedented that written communication establishes a quid pro quo between the criminal in question and the minister,” said Surjewala.
“Would any reasonable person believe that the External Affairs Minister helped the criminal without knowledge of the Prime Minister?” he added.
Swaraj had on Sunday said she had taken a humanitarian view of Lalit Modi’s case since his wife was suffering from cancer.
She further said that British MP Keith Vaz had spoken to her on the same, adding she believes that giving an Indian citizen ’emergency travel documents’ cannot spoil relations between India and the UK.
Vaz, who is facing an inquiry in the UK over the role he played in Modi receiving his travel papers, said that he had checked with the Indian Government before taking any action and added that he had received a ‘no objection’ from New Delhi.
