External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has responded to the appeals of a Hyderabad man whose sister was allegedly held captive in horrific conditions by her employers, a doctor couple, in Saudi Arabia. The brother claims that the woman named Zabeena Begum has been harassed and is being beaten by her employers. Zabeena has been working as a domestic help at the residence of the couple in Abha city in Saudi Arabia since December 2015. Zabeena’s brother, Hamid Khan claims that his sister is being kept at the house against her wishes. Hamid had appealed to Sushma Swaraj over micro-blogging website Twitter.
Hamid told the Indian Express that, ”Zabeena has been working at the house of Ajjo and Wala for well over a year. They make her do extra work and keep her in inhumane conditions. Her employers are not treating her well and verbally abuse her.” Hameed also said that his sister has only received two months salary.
Hamid has also alleged that his sister once approached the Saudi police, but instead of helping her the police took her back to her employers. Sushma Swaraj through a tweet has asked India’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia to look into the matter, according to the Indian Express.
Social activist Fazil Khan has told ANI that ”After speaking to Zabeena I tweeted the issue to EAM Sushma Swaraj, who has informed the Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia”. Zabeena’s employers have decided to send her back to India after the Indian Embassy’s intervention. Zabeena is likely to return to India after the holy month of Ramadan.
