External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday hailed the appointment of women on significant positions by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday hailed the appointment of women on significant positions by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Slamming rivals for calling BJP anti-women, the EAM said that BJP has given 4 women CMs and 4 women governors to the nation, adding, that it is for the first time in history that two out of four members of Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) are also women. “I was made EAM in May 2014 and now Nirmala Ji is the Defence Minister. 2 out of 4 CCS members are women now,” Swaraj was quoted as saying in Ahmedabad. “Prior to our govt, no woman was ever a member of CCS, comprising Home, External Affairs, Defence and Finance ministry,” Swaraj said.
Similar comments were made by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman when she was appointed as the first female Defence Minister of India. She had also hailed the presence of two women members in the crucial Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).
“What is more important is there are going to be two women in the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), Sushma Ji and me,” Sitharaman was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
The BJP and its parent organisation RSS are often targeted by rivals for being anti-national. Recently, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who is campaigning in poll-bound Gujarat, attacked RSS and BJP alleging both did not give any importance to women. Gandhi even asked how many women were seen attending the Sangh’s ‘shakhas’.
“The BJP’s thinking is that till women are silent they are good, when they start speaking up they try to shut them (women) up,” Gandhi was quoted as saying by PTI at a gathering of students in Gujarat on the second day of his election campaign in the state.
“Their organisation is the RSS. How many women are there in the RSS… Have you ever seen any woman in shakhas wearing shorts?” Rahul said in a sarcastic tone, adding, “In the Congress, you will see women at every level in the organisation.” He further said, “Their (BJP-RSS) thinking is, as long as women are silent, all is good. But as soon as she opens her mouth, they run to shut her up,” according to ANI.
