Suhaib Iliyasi, the man renowned for his ‘India’s Most Wanted’ show has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his own wife 17-years ago. Delhi High Court on Saturday had convicted the TV producer and anchor and had declared him guilty of the charge. Interestingly, it is ironical that he had shot to fame as a host of a crime show. Iliyasi was arrested on March 28, 2000, allegedly for killing his wife Anju. Charges were framed against him after his sister-in-law and mother-in-law alleged he used to torture his wife for dowry. After Delhi HC had convicted Iliyasi, Lawyer Satender Sharma who appeared in the court on behalf of the complainant had said that it was a ”long wait” before justice was served.
He added that following the murder on January 11, 2000, police had filed a chargesheet under IPC sections 498A and 304B (cruelty and harassment) against Ilyasi. On March 29, 2003, the court had passed an order on the same charges. Sharma said that initially, a post-mortem was conducted by a board of three doctors, two of whom opined that the death was “suicidal”.
In 1993 Suhaib Ilyasi had married his classmate Anju from Jamia Mass Communication course in London. Anju was then found murdered on January 10, 2000, at their East Delhi residence with multiple stab wound. The lawyer said Anju was aware of her husband’s “illegal acts and financial misdeeds”, and wanted to shift to Canada with her child. Ilyasi did not want this to happen. Ilyasi was one of the most popular faces on TV as the anchor of the show India’s Most Wanted.
