Startup India (@startupindia), the official Twitter handle of the government's pet project, sent out some "Unwarranted & irrelevant" tweets, which were later deleted by it.
Nirmala Sitharaman, the Commerce and Industry minister, today put a timely lid to what could have erupted into an embarrassing controversy for the Modi government. Startup India (@startupindia), the official Twitter handle of the government’s pet project, sent out some “Unwarranted & irrelevant” tweets, which were later deleted by it. The handle had retweeted messages that targeted journalists. Even as the images of the retweets began circulating on the social media site, the Startup India handle said, “We are here to create the world’s best startup ecosystem. Unwarranted & irrelevant retweets have been deleted. We do not endorse anything outside the startup ecosystem. Apologies to our followers.”
Additionally, Commerce & Industry Minister’s official Twitter handle, @CimGOI, also put out eight tweets in a series explaining why the retweets had happened. According to the Ministry, retweets had been done by an employee of the agency hired by Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion. “1/n- This is with reference to two unwarranted & irrelevant re-tweets done in the midnight by @startupindia handle ……. @nsitharaman. 2/n- Moment it was noticed that @startupindia had done 2 unauthorized retweets. Right then at midnight the retweets were undone @nsitharaman. 3/n- The unauthorized re tweets were done by one employee of the agency duly hired by @DIPPGOI through a tendering process @nsitharaman. 4/n-Person assigned by the agency for this particular job is not decided by the dept & is the sole prerogative of the agency @nsitharaman.”
“5/n-The usual practice of getting the tweets/retweets approved from the department was not followed in this case. @nsitharaman. 6/n It was completely wrong & unacceptable for the employee to have retweeted on a matter completely unrelated to StartupIndia @nsitharaman. 7/n- The concerned employee has already put in his papers & will have nothing to do with @startupindia from hereon. @nsitharaman. 8/8- We hope that inadvertent misdeeds of 1 person outside our dept will not undermine the true spirit of Team Startup India @nsitharaman,” the Commerce & Industry Minister’s official handle put out.
The prompt response of the government met with appreciation from Twitterati, with the likes of Kiran Bedi tweeting, “Our country is fortunate to have Ministers of the kind of @nsitharaman: They have provided credibility and acumen.” One person tweeted, “@CimGOI @nsitharaman brilliant prompt action ma’am!. Certainly protects d spirit of @startupindia wen such clear msg is put out! Kudos!!”. “@CimGOI @nsitharaman kudos ma’am for making necessary amends and that too promptly. Citizens tweet expecting responses and action,” said another.
