Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be one of the most powerful leaders of the world, but it seems he is not the most popular person on the internet in India. According to a list of most trending people in 2016 prepared by Google, PM Modi doesn’t even feature in the top 10.
What is more surprising is the fact that the list is dominated by US President-elect Donald Trump, followed by badminton star PV Sindhu and Sonam Gupta in the top three.
While Trump and Sindhu have reasons to be among top trending people on Google in 2016, Sonam Gupta’s presence in the top three is interesting. An imaginary woman, who captured the imagination of the always curious Indian people after PM Modi’s demonetisation decision on November 8, Sonam Gupta’s popularity can be seen both as a failure or the success of the note ban.
Her name appeared on a currency note with a statement “Sonam Gupta bewafa hai” (Sonam Gupta is disloyal). Soon itt became viral and trended on social media for several days. A number of people even came up with their own theories about the identity of the mystery woman. Other shared jokes and images like below.
Other trending people on Google in the top 10 are Olympian Dipa Karmakar and Sakshi Malik, actresses Disha Patani, Urvashi Rautela and Puja Hegde, businessman Vijay Mallya and journalist Arnab Goswami.

Journalist Arnab Goswami had surprised the country by resigning from the post 0f Editor-in-Chief on Times Now in October. It was probably for the first time that resignation of a journalist sparked so much response from across the country.
