While she enters the Upper House for the second time, Amit Shah has entered Parliament for the first time. Both leaders were administered the oath of office by Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu. The minister took her oath in Sanskrit, jansatta.com said.
Soon after being sworn in, Smriti Irani touched the feet of the vice president to seek his blessings. Both she and Amit Shah have been elected from Gujarat for Rajya Sabha. Amit Shah’s entry in Parliament is likely to be a big boost for BJP, which is short of the majority in the Rajya Sabha. He had been a five-time MLA in the Gujarat Assembly.
Apart from these two BJP leaders, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel was also able to secure his seat amid high drama from the state. In the election that was held on August 8, the BJP had pitted Balwant Singh Rajput with the hope that his defeat would be a huge embarrassment for Congress president Sonia Gandhi, as Patel is her political secretary, ANI said.
