Shopian Firing Issue: BJP MP Subramanian Swamy after lashing out at Jammu and Kasmir Mehbooba Mufti for ordering magisterial probe into the incident, has questioned the silence of Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman over the issue.
It seems the Shopian firing issue has brought Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, who leads a PDP-BJP coalition in the state, and Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at loggerheads with BJP MP Subramanian Swamy. In the latest development on the issue, outspoken BJP leader Swamy has reacted sharply to CM Mufti’s comments on the issue in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, in which she said, “I talked to the Union Defence minister immediately after learning about the incident and she was positive in her response. She said if you feel there is carelessness (on the part of the Army), you take whatever action you want to take. Subsequently, we lodged an FIR and ordered a magisterial probe.” Now, Swamy has questioned the silence of the Defence Minister saying, “Wondering why even today Def minister has not given a clarification. Do we take her silence to mean yes. If it is, then it’s totally against party policies, sentiments of Indians and patriotism. If she doesn’t give a clarification by 2 February, I’ll ask it in the House,” as per ANI.
This is not the first attack by the BJP leader but Swamy had earlier threatened to topple the Mehbooba Mufti government if she refuses to withdraw the FIR against the army personnel. Slamming the PDP government in Jammu and Kashmir, Swamy said, ”What’s this nonsense? Dismiss that government. Tell Mehbooba (Mufti) to withdraw the FIR else her government would be toppled.” The Rajya Sabha law-maker also questioned the BJP-PDP alliance saying, “Why are we even running that govt? I haven’t understood that till date.”
Such strong reaction by BJP MP Swamy came in response to the announcement made by the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister in which she claimed that the case against those (Army personnel) involved in firing on protesters in Shopian that left two civilians dead will be taken to a “logical conclusion”.
On Saturday last week, two civilians were killed when Army personnel fired at a stone-pelting mob in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. Allegedly the crowd had started pelting stones on a security force convoy passing through Ganovpora village, as per media reports. The incident prompted Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to order an inquiry into the incident.
