The last day of SAD-BJP government’s assembly session on Wednesday witnessed a shoe being thrown at Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia by a Congress legislator in the Assembly premises. Congress lawmaker Tarlochan Soondh threw his show at the minister during a protest staged by his party in the House.
In a first of its kind, protest in the state by the Congress MLAs came after a chaotic hour on Monday afternoon in the House during which the party’s no-confidence motion against the government was defeated by voice vote without a discussion. The MLAs decided they would not leave the house until the Speaker promised that a debate would be allowed when the House meets again on Wednesday, after Tuesday’s Eid holiday. As a consequence of which, 27 MLAs including four women, led by CLP leader Charanjit Singh Channi, dug in for the long night in the house.
This is the last session of the Vidhan Sabha before Punjab goes to polls in early 2017. According to sources, when electricity was cut off from the premises, some MLAs grew anxious in the dark as they used up their mobile phone torches. MLAs led by leader of the Opposition Charanjit Channi screamed,”Light band karne wali sarkar murdabad. Democracy khatam karne wali murdabad.” It was only after a protest to secretary of Vidhan Sabha Shashi Lakhanpal Mishra, that a few bulbs and fans were switched on.
