Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim (Source: PTI)Dera Sacha Sauda chief and self-styled godman, Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim, whose properties in Punjab were pegged to be worth around Rs 52 crore, has told the court that he doesn’t have Rs 30 lakh, which he is supposed to pay to the rape victims as fine. The lawyers of Ram Rahim, on Monday, have pleaded before the Punjab and Haryana High Court that since he has “renounced the world”, he is not in a position to pay the Rs 30 lakh fine imposed by the special CBI court. They made this appeal in the High court while they were challenging the decision of 20 years of imprisonment given by the CBI court. As per an Indian Express report, the appeal against his conviction in the rape cases has been admitted by a division bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhir Mittal. However, the court has maintained that Ram Rahim will have to pay the fine imposed on him within the stipulated time. As per the Indian Express report, Gurmeet’s counsel S K Garg Narvana told the division bench that Dera properties have been attached and hence he cannot pay the fine.
Earlier, a special CBI court had pronounced him guilty in two separate cases of rape and sentenced him to 20 years of imprisonment. Meanwhile, his alleged daughter Honeypreet Insan has been given six days of police remand by a Panchkula court. Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim is currently serving his sentence in Rohtak’s Suneria jail.
