Shobhaa De, in a tweet recently questioned the appointment of Urjit Patel as the new Reserve bank of India governor. The journalist, recently in the news for shaming the Indian athletes at the Rio Olympics 2016. De took a sarcastic undertone in her tweet when she asked fellow twitteratis if anyone was surprised at the appointment of the new RBI governor. Urjit Patel was declared the new governor by the BJP led central government following the end of Raghuram Rajan’s term at the office. Patel will officially join the office in September 2016. Patel has been serving as Deputy Governor of the Central bank for over three years now. He had earlier led a panel proposing the targeting of inflation and the set up of a new monetary policy.

Patel has a Doctorate (Ph.D) in Economics from Yale University. He has also graduated from the University of London and Oxford University. He is known to have expertise on the matter of inflation. Patel has also worked with the IMF and the Boston Consulting Group. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday had a hour-long discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the appointment of Patel as the new governor.

De’s tweet might have been a reference to the fact that Patel had served as the President of Business Development at Reliance Industries Limited from 1997 to 2006. Shobhaa De, on the other hand, has been in the midst of controversies after her jab at the Indian athletes participating at the summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil. De had called the Indian contingent at the Olympics a waste of money and opportunity. Twitter had hit back hard at her for her tweet and once the Indian women started performing at the Olympics, celebrities, and common people alike took to the social networking site to troll her. De had later gone on congratulating the athletes for their performance.
