From Tamil Nadu to Odisha, the subsidized meal programme might now find wings in Madhya Pradesh. MP’s Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is reportedly having closed door meetings with his BJP mates to begin the scheme that has bloomed big time in other states.

The subsidized meal programme that focuses on providing budget food to the poor has previously been tried in Tamil Nadu and then Odisha, where it received a big thumbs up from the citizens.

The thali that contains a full meal of roti, dal, sabzi, rice and pickle is way cheaper than the roadside eateries people have to eat from. The meal in these canteens or centers is economical to the needs of the lower middle class, sometimes as low as Rs 10 per thali.

In Tamil Nadu, when the scheme was launched in 2013, in the name of Amma Canteens, the poor could not rejoice enough for the affordability factor. Observing the reaction, the number of canteens was increased from a mere 15 to 300 now. Similar was Odisha’s Aahar Yojna, that claims to satiate over 60,000 people in these centres.

As if taking a cue from the hit strategy, MP CM Chouhan is also aiming the vote bank for assembly elections by bringing in the meal mail. Previously, Annapurana Yojana was also brought in to satiate the poor with budget meals. This move can be massive; both for BJP as well as the worker class of MP, who often have to skip meals to compensate for the savings.
