Congress leader and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit may be appointed Congress in-charge of Punjab a day after Kamal Nath tendered his resignation to party chief Sonia Gandhi, a news channel reported today.
Under fire after being appointed as the party in charge of Punjab affairs, Congress leader Kamal Nath on Wednesday wrote to party president Sonia Gandhi requesting to be relieved from his duties, so that the attention of the party is not diverted from the real issues such as the ‘rampant drug trade’ in the state.
Former union minister for youth affairs and sports M.S. Gill on Wednesday said Kamal Nath’s selection to the coveted post in the state is akin “rubbing salt on wounds”.
On Nath’s resignation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the move simply proved his complicity in the 1984 riots, adding that the grand old party had “teased” the people of Punjab by appointing him despite knowing his involvement in the riots.
The Congress Party last week, made important changes in its leadership in three states, including Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, where the polls are due to be held next year.
Dikshit had last served as Governor of Kerala. During her political career, she has served as Delhi chief minister for three consecutive terms.
Formal announcement by the Congress on the same is awaited….
