Shahabuddin bail: Nitish Kumar’s JD (U) may move SC, but still not sure if Siwan strongman is a criminal

A day after Nitish Kumar-led JD (U) was reportedly non-committal on whether or not the Bihar government would approach the SC against the bail to murder convict Mohammad Shahabuddin, there seems to be a change in the party's strategy.

A day after Nitish Kumar-led JD (U) was reportedly non-committal on whether or not the Bihar government would approach the Supreme Court against the bail granted by Patna High Court to murder convict Mohammad Shahabuddin, there seems to be a change in the party’s strategy.

However, the party, it seems, is still not sure if the Siwan strongman is a criminal. A post on JD(U)’s official twitter page today said the Bihar government would take “all possible” legal steps against “alleged” criminal Shahabuddin. “Bihar government will take all possible legal steps against the bail to alleged criminal Shahabuddin. There will be the rule of law in Bihar,” the post said.

JD(U) spokesperson Ajay Alok told ANI on Wednesday that the state government would follow the same policy that it follows for all criminals. “Natural that state Govt appeals in higher courts against the lower court order, our policy same for all criminals,” he said.

The change in the party’s stance on Shahabuddin is apparent from previous tweets.

On September 9, Alok had tweeted: “Democracy is about people so people want Shahabuddin, what Nitish kumar can do when court grants bail ? Cheers to our judiciary @NitishKumar”

JD (U)’s official twitter handle had also said on September 10: “Bail of Sahabuddin is a complete legal issue & of anothr party. Before asking #BJP must answer about a criminal named #AmitShah out on bail.”

It remains to be seen how this change in stance would affect the coalition government led by Kumar in Bihar.
