The Narendra Modi government had capped the price of coronary stents almost seven months ago followed by a massive cut in their prices by about 1 lakh. The news came as a silver lining to many seeking medical benefits from the reduced prices, Indian Express reported. Those people across the country have been disheartened since the hospitals are yet to cut prices on the package cost of angioplasty. Angioplasty is a procedure in which a stent is used to open a narrowed or blocked artery to improve blood flow. A top official with three major general insurance companies have told that the capping though has had no effect on the overall price of the angioplasty procedure and negotiations with hospitals are ongoing.

According to officials of two major private hospitals, the prices of stents have gone down by atleast Rs 30,000-40,000. But on scrutinizing the bills it was revealed that following the cut in stent prices, the cost of other components required for the procedure has shot up which include balloons and catheters. Indian Express quoted CEO of a major private general insurance company saying, ” Hospitals are yet to bring down the price of the procedure (angioplasty) in a meaningful manner. The renegotiation is on with the hospitals and we expect that the prices will come down over the next six months. While the price of stents has come down, hospitals maintain that their other overheads have gone up. So the (price) decrease in the package may not be in the same proportion as the decrease in the price of the stent.”

The CEO further added that each year angioplasty procedure sees a hike of about 10-15% in their price but there might not be any increase in prices in the coming two years. “Every year, the cost of an angioplasty procedure goes up by 10-15 per cent. While the stent cost has come down, other processes do see a price increase. However, I don’t think that for the next two years there will be an increase in the price of the overall package of the procedure,” he said.
