Stating that government must order a high-level probe into the leak of top secret data regarding India’s Scorpene submarine programme, former Defence Minister AK Antony on Wednesday said that it is a matter of serious concern. Antony said, “we request the government to immediately order a high-level enquiry to find out the truth”. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the Navy Chief was asked to analyse what data has been leaked. He, however, maintained that the leak wasn’t 100 per cent (of the data). “This (the report) came to my knowledge at midnight, it is a case of hacking. The Navy Chief has been asked to analyze as to what exactly has been leaked,” Parrikar said.
A report in the Australian media revealed that sensitive data related to India’s Scorpene submarines has been leaked, with French shipbuilder DCNS, which designed the submarine, facing a leak of documents spreading over 22,000 pages. The leaked data includes highly sensitive details of the submarine including technical manuals and models of the boat’s antennae. It also gives elaborate details on the secret stealth capabilities of such as frequencies they gather intelligence at, range and endurance, what levels of noise they make at various speeds and their diving depths. All this is highly classified and sensitive information. Apart from this, the documents also disclose the magnetic, electromagnetic and infra-red data. Specifications of the submarine’s torpedo launch system and the combat system have also been revealed. And it doesn’t end at this! The report also states that the speed and conditions needed for using periscope, the noise specifications of the propeller and the radiated noise levels that occur when the submarine surfaces, have also been leaked.
