At least six children were killed and 20 others were reported injured when a school bus carrying them met with an accident and overturned near Kanina village in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district on Thursday, as PTI reported.

Initial reports indicate the bus overturned while passing another vehicle in Mahendragarh. “Several school children have been injured,” a police official was quoted as saying by PTI.

As many as 35-40 students from classes 4 to 10 were on the bus at the time of the accident. The injured students were rushed to a nearby hospital. The parents of the students and the school staff have reached the hospital.

The police have arrived at the spot and launched an investigation. The identities of the deceased and the exact cause of the accident are yet to be ascertained. The driver of the school bus has also sustained injuries.

According to police officials, the driver of the bus has been taken into custody. ‘We have apprehended him, and his medical examination is being conducted. Afterward, we will be able to properly establish whether he was actually drunk or not,’ Superintendent of Police Arsh Verma told PTI.

The SP further added that some reports also suggest that the driver indulged in rash driving.

“The injured children were rushed to a hospital,’ he said.
