Scholarship row: Shruti Rajkumar Badole, daughter of state Social Justice Minister Rajkumar Badole responded to reports that revealed she was on a government scholarship list. She reacted by asking if is it was her fault that she happens to be the daughter of a minister. The statement by the IIT-Madras graduate comes after her father was asked for an explanation by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over her name being in the list of beneficiaries of government scholarship. Shruti whose name figured on the list of beneficiaries of government scholarship for pursuing higher education abroad has reportedly said that she will not accept the state government’s scholarship for studying abroad after a controversy erupted over the issue.

According to PTI, the Social Justice Department gives foreign education scholarship to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. The name of Shruti who is now pursuing her masters from the University of Manchester (UK) along with the names of two others who are sons of senior bureaucrats appeared in this year’s list. The list triggered a controversy given their privileged backgrounds, though technically they fulfilled the criteria. Shruti while defending her stance was quoted saying, “The course I am pursuing at the University of Manchester (UK) does not have any scholarship. Hence I decided to apply for a scholarship offered by the government. Is it my fault that I happened to be minister’s daughter?” Further while talking about the selection process that is usually headed by her father, Shruti said that he had recused himself from it. She added, “The state administration itself had come up with a government resolution in 2015 allowing SC/ST students from any income background to apply for a state scholarship, provided the applying university is among the top 100 varsities as per QS World University Rankings.”

While talking about the ranking of Indian varsities, Shruti Rajkumar Badole said, “No university of India features even in top 200 varsities list of the same group. Is it my fault that I got selected for such university?” She further said she had decided against taking education loan as her family was paying installments for having taken such a loan for her brother. While talking about the scholarship, Shruti said, “the government sponsors three students pursuing PhD in science as per its quota”, her application was also received this year. Shruti who has decided not to avail the scholarship after the controversy said, “Why am I targeted in the name of denying an opportunity for a more deserving student.”
