Hours after Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was detained at the Los Angeles airport, legendary Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan was denied visa by the United Kingdom High Commission. He was scheduled to perform at the Royal Festival Hall next month. He tweeted saying, “Shocked and appalled. #UK visa rejected.” His son Amaan Ali Khan, who is also a Sarod artist, said that British officials when asked about why the visa was rejected had replied that his father’s visa application was “not convincing enough”. He added, “This has never happened before. In our country this is not cool. It is very sad that it has happened to him. He is someone who has worked all his life for the country and peace. The government should take interest why they (UK) are doing this.”
Tagging Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and the Indian High Commission in London, Amjad Ali Khan said that he had been performing in the UK since early 1970s and had also played for Prince Charles. When asked bout the visa rejection, the UK High Commission said that they do not respond to individual visa applications. More details are awaited on this development.
