Samajwadi Party MLC Sarojini Agarwal resigns, joins BJP

During BJP President Amit Shah's visit to the state capital last week, two SP and one BSP MLCs had resigned and joined the BJP.

In yet another jolt to the Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh, SP MLC Sarojini Agarwal on Friday resigned from the party and joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This is a major blow for SP as prior to this MLC Bukkal Nawab joined BJP. An eminent gynaecologist of Meerut, Agarwal has been a member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council for two terms now. Meanwhile, Agarwal’s resignation has been accepted by her party. Agarwal, whose tenure was to end in 2021, was quoted by PTI as saying, “I had been party MLC twice due to Netaji (Mulayam SinghYadav). As he is not active in the party, I have resigned. I don’t have problems with anyone in the party and I respect everyone. I felt awkward after split in the party and I did not feel like working in it.”

During BJP President Amit Shah’s visit to the state capital last week, two SP and one BSP MLCs had resigned and joined the BJP. Apart from Nawab, other two leaders were MLCs Yashwant Singh of SP and Thakur Jaiveer Singh from Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party.

For the resignations, SP president Akhilesh Yadav had accused the saffron party of luring the MLCs of Opposition parties through a “political conspiracy”, while, BSP supremo Mayawati also accused the BJP of misusing power and state machinery in order to target opposition parties and their legislators.
