Superstar Salman Khan has escaped spending as much as 5 years in jail after the Rajasthan High Court acquitted him in the black buck and chinkara killing cases. The lower court had sentenced him to 1-year and 5-year terms in these cases for which he has spent some time in jail. Alongside Salman, other actors, who were then shooting for “Hum Sath Sath Hain” movie were also allegedly part of the group that killed these animals. Among them were Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre and Tabu. Salman Khan’s counsel Mahesh Bora had contended that the actor was falsely accused merely on the statements of key witness Harish Dulani, the driver of the vehicle, which was allegedly used in poaching in both these cases. Take a look here at how the case spanned almost two decades to finally come to today’s conclusion.

1. 1998: Salman Khan was first accused of killing a black buck and a chinkara in two separate incidents – one animal was killed near Jodhpur on September 26, while the other was shot near Ghoda Farms on September 28.

2. 1998, September: Two separate cases were registered against Salman Khan under section 51 of Wildlife Protection Act for poaching of two chinkaras in village Bhawad and one chinkara in Mathania (Ghoda Farm).

3. 2006, February 17: After the case went to court and dragged on for years, Salman Khan was sentenced to 1 year in prison for killing the chinkara. The actor had then gone in appeal to a high court, which stayed the carrying out of the sentence.

4. 2006, April 10: In an even bigger blow to Salman Khan, the court sentenced him to a 5-year prison term for which he was remanded to Jodhpur jail. However, the actor was granted bail later – he spent a total of two days and three nights in jail.

5. 2007, August 27: After exhausting all his appeals Salman Khan was again imprisoned in Jodhpur jail after the District and Sessions Court confirmed his imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 that was imposed on him. The actor was reportedly lodged in the same barracks as in his previous incarceration.

During his time in jail this time, Salman Khan had reportedly spent a sleepless night in his first 24 hours spent in jail. He did not interact with any prisoners there. He had to give up his civilian clothes and wear a prisoner’s attire – a white dress. For breakfast he was given chana and tea. He was famously called Qaidi No. 343. Salman made bail again after being jailed for nearly a week and was then freed.

6. 2012, July 24: As many as six years later the Rajasthan High Court cleared the filing of charges in the case which finally led to the conducting of a trial.

7. 2016, July 25: The Rajasthan High Court cleared Salman Khan of all charges and allowed him to go free. The high court said that the pellets recovered from the Chinkaras were not fired from Salman Khan’s licensed gun.
