Salman Khan black buck poaching case: In huge relief for the actor, the Rajasthan High Court, Jodhpur today acquitted him in the 1998 chinkara and black buck killing case. Earlier in the day, superstar Salman Khan, who was basking under the glow of the success of his latest movie release Sultan, was looking at the possibility of going back to jail  if the court upheld the lower court’s verdict.

Salman Khan was staring at anything between 1-year and 5-year jail terms respectively which were slapped on him by a lower court – Salman had gone to the high court in appeal against that judgement. Salman Khan’s counsel Hastimal Saraswat said that, “He has been acquitted in both the cases by the high court”.

The Rajasthan High Court while clearing Salman Khan of all charges and allowing him to go free said that the pellets recovered from the Chinkaras were not fired from Salman Khan’s licensed gun.

If the High Court had said the verdict by the lower court was valid, then Salman Khan would have had to go to jail almost immediately. He has already spent time in Jodhpur jail twice.

What has weakened the prosecution’s case against Salman was the missing driver of the jeep that was used by the actor and his co-stars during their hunting trip.

Defence counsel Mahesh Bora had said that Khan had been falsely implicated in these cases, merely on the statements of a key witness Harish Dulani, the driver of the vehicle, allegedly used by the actor.

Not just Salman Khan, other high profile Bollywood actors too are allegedly involved in the black buck case. Among them are Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre and Tabu all of whom were then shooting a film “Hum Sath Sath Hain” when they went on a hunting trip – the case spans killing of a black buck and chinkara in two separate incidents. While the first animal was killed at Bhawad on the outskirts of Jodhpur on September 26, 1998, the other was killed at Ghoda Farms on September 28, 1998.
